Shawna is part of the Kaska Dena Nation and resides in the community of Fort Ware, BC. In 2021, Shawna took on the position of Kaska SEA Regional Coordinator / Natural Resource Council (NRC) Co‑Chair.

Following graduation, Shawna worked as a teacher’s assistant at the Fort Ware school. Interest in continuing her education led her to Thompson Rivers University where she pursued studies towards a Bachelor of Business degree. Passion for her community and the land drew Shawna back home where she began working for the Kaska Strategic Engagement Agreement processing referrals, building relationships with proponents, and helping with the development of a Treaty Governance Toolkit.

As a result of her experience, Shawna was offered the position of Lands and Resources Manager for the Kwadacha Nation and was involved in numerous initiatives including Kaska Land Guardian Supervisor, participating on Fish and Wildlife working groups, Mineral Exploration working group, and First Nation Working Group for the fish and wildlife compensation program. She was appointed to the MK Advisory Board in 2013 and remains an active member, bringing to the Board years of work experience in lands and resources, land protection, and Indigenous matters.
