The First Nation is set to emerge from third-party management April 1st, and the Chief says things are slowly getting back on track.

The Liard First Nation in Watson Lake says it will emerge out of third-party management starting April 1st.

Chief George Morgan says the third-party manager, Ganhada Management Group from B.C., has been transferring files to the First Nation since January.

“We worked hard at making sure that our financials were in order.” Morgan told the RUSH late Tuesday morning.

“We’ve put a lot of work into our financial management, and just operating and supporting good governance. Having regular council meetings, I think our funding partners (Indigenous Services Canada) appreciated that.”

Morgan says the First Nation and Development Corporation is in debt, but would not give a dollar amount.

“We’re still crunching numbers.” Morgan said.

“We still have not actually gone through the finances of our Development Corporation closely yet, we don’t know what’s there yet. Chances are we’re going to find debt.”

He says the First Nation is looking forward to recruiting and hiring people to deliver their own programs and services.

The First Nation has been under third-party management since 2014.
